First we collect paper…

the adoption process starts as a paper chase

This section of our site is more of a journal that documents and shares the  journey to adopt the two children that we are fondly referring to as the Wee Kahunas.

Knowing that we wanted to adopt children from Russia (we very much like the idea of the connection to Bobbi’s heritage from Eastern Europe.) made it easier to choose the country and then select the agency that we will work with, especially with the recommendations and support from Bobbi’s cousin, Howard, and his wife, Gail.

After telling our Parents that they were going to be Grandparents (nothing is better than getting to spread joy like this!) and telling our son, Jordan, that he’s going to get to be a big brother, (he, by the way, has already claimed the right to veto any music and clothing choices we might make for the kids, to save them from any damage to their status as “cool kahunas” as they grow up.) we felt ready to start..

As you might suspect the first steps in this process are all paper related. (The picture at the top of this page is of our actual files…only one week into the process.) We’ve gotten a quick start to collecting and submitting all of the dozens of certified copies of birth certificates, marriage license, divorce decrees, passports, etc., to the home study agency that will be completing that portion of our dossier for Russia.

As you can see there is already a large crate filed with hanging files holding court on top of the desk in our office filling up with copies, and original documents that we know we will need.

The two of us are so excited that we’ve even starting looking at family sized cars (we are thinking that the mini cooper might just be a bit too mini to include, strollers, and car seats, and of course the children!) We are devouring books on everything from the actual adoption process, to attachment parenting and even things like ways to set up an organic lifestyle for the children. (we aren’t planning to feed them twigs and rocks, it’s just that we want to be certain the nursery is as safe and healthy as we can possibly make it to help the Wee Kahunas recover from their time in the orphanage as quickly as possible.

As we get news, or cross milestone items off our list, we’ll try to post updates here for all of you. We’d love to hear from you and hope that you’ll add your thoughts and questions here. We think this might be a nice place to keep a lot of the memories and details to save for the children when they are old enough to want to know how they got to be a part of our family.
